Transplants

Transplants of human organs and tissues, are to transfer a tissue or organ from its original site to a different function. This can be within a single individual or from one individual to another, for the purpose of restoring lost functions of the organ, replacing it with a healthy one.

Autologous or autograft
An individual’s own tissue is used, meaning that donor and recipient are the same person.

Syngeneic
Monozygotic twins or identical, meaning that the donor and recipient are genetically identical.

Homotransplants or allograft
Donor and recipient are of the same species but genetically different.

Heterotrasplantes or xenotransplantation
Between individuals of different species, or artificial organs. The person receiving benefits is called transplant recipient, receiving an organ, tissue or cell in their body to perform the same function performed in the donor.
